Frontera Rep presented this autobiographical tour de force as part of its 2013-2014 season. HIGHWAY 47 was written by playwright KJ Sanchez, directed by Kathryn Smith-McGlynn and starred Rebecca Rivas. Sanchez grew up the youngest of twelve children in the high desert town of Tomé, New Mexico where her family was one of the original 34 settlers in 1734. An engaging and high spirited story about family, community, and the “importance of place,” HIGHWAY 47 has a bit of everything — comedy, drama, music, dancing, and cutting edge new media. KJ Sanchez’s plays have been produced at Asolo Rep, Actors Theater of Louisville, Two River Theater, Baltimore’s CENTERSTAGE, Round House Theater, Working Classroom, Cornerstone and Off-Broadway at Urban Stages. A noted director and actress, Sanchez is the voice of many characters in the cartoons DORA THE EXPLORER and GO DIEGO GO. Sanchez is a Fox Fellow, the 2012 Douglas Wollop Fellow, an Albert Award Nominee and an NEA CDP for directors recipient.
This production of HIGHWAY 47 was made possible in part by a matching grant award from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
